Neuromodulators refers to the injections of medications, usually derived from the botulinum toxin, into certain muscles of the face to prevent muscle contraction and preventing skin wrinkling. When done properly, most of the superficial wrinkles will disappear within a matter of days up to a couple of weeks.
Botulinum Toxin medications are produced by several U.S. and outside the U.S. companies and sold under various names. The reputable companies have been through the full FDA approval process, which means extensive research into the drug, method of action and extensive clinical trials. If you see an ad for a very low cost product, it might be one that has not been reviewed and approved by FDA.
The oldest, and perhaps best known of the legitimate products is Botox, the product produced by Allergan (recently acquired by AbbVie, Inc). It was originally intended to treat other conditions, then based on clinical trials, facial wrinkle reduction was authorized.
Dysport is a slightly different form of botulinum toxin produced by the Galderma company. This product comes in a different dosage, so it may seem like more is required but that is just a number. It was developed in the UK and underwent clinical studies in the US and abroad. In the interest of full disclosure, I was an employee of the company originally licensed to research and market this product, and was somewhat involved in the FDA filing and review process. Alas! I do not have any stock in the company!
Xeomin (pronounced Zee-o-men), is produced by Merz, a European company. Most of our patients find this product works very well, with a rapid response time and a duration of several months. Of course, every person is unique.
Jeuveau is the product of Evolus, and is the newest to come to market. Some patients feel an almost immediate effect without being "frozen." You may really like this one!
All are administered just under the skin with a very fine needle. It leaves a "bee-sting" like bump for a few hours. The wrinkles (forehead, crow's feet, etc.) begin to lessen in a matter of a few days to a week. The effect lasts for about six months.
Prices vary depending on the product, but will be around $15.00 per unit. Watch out for the ads offering product for $8 per unit. Who knows what they are injecting?
Most skin tags can be removed quickly and nearly painlessly. Unless you prefer not, we will first numb the area of the skin tag then remove it. Easy!
Moles must first be evaluated to be sure it isn't a form of skin cancer (which only a dermatologist can safely remove).
